Thomas Müller drove in the opener in the 17th minute before Claudio Pizarro doubled the advantage shortly after with a powerful header. FC Schalke 04 were given a test by third-tier SV Darmstadt 98 but prevailed 3-1, while second-tier 1. FC Kaiserslautern eliminated top-flight Hertha BSC Berlin with a 3-1 win. Eintracht Frankfurt avoided a similar fate with a 2-0 victory against VfL Bochum 1848 and Matthias Ginter and Mike Hanke struck for SC Freiburg in a 2-1 win against VfB Stuttgart 2-1.

Manchester United FC responded to their weekend derby defeat against Manchester City FC by sinking rivals Liverpool FC to make the last 16 of the English League Cup, while holders Swansea City FC were knocked out in emphatic style by Birmingham City FC.
