The status of women in Nigeria should be urgently and critically looked into. This should form a key focus of the national conference and I hope there are those appointed to represent the interests of the Nigerian woman in the conference. (Mama Peace, shey u no forget your constituency ni!)

This also goes for other African countries. Its really high time we started treating our women with utmost respect and fear of the law. There should be laws made specifically to protect the women - our wives, girlfriends, and sisters. Imagine Oscar Pistols (Pistorious I mean or even notorious)???? A beautiful model with a whole beautiful life ahead of her, had her life cut short and her crime??? She was bold enough to love Oscar even in his legless body. She gave her full body to a legless body...that's bravery!!! What did she get in return??? How do you begin to compare the manner in which a cool, calm, and collected beautiful lady enters a room to the cruel and mannerless manner in which a robber bolts into a room.... Think about both scenarios, do they compare??? Well, I have sisters and I know how they do enter the house. Anyways that's a gist for another day.

The degree of abuse some women go through in marriage in the hands of some imbecilic fools, boys who call themselves men is very seriously unbearable. We can't keep quiet no more about it.

A senior cousin of mine, handsome, educated, gainfully employed and very well-to-do once told me when I queried why he was still single that "
marriage is a minimum of 45 to 50 years contract and you don't sign such contracts in a hurry" If you must sign it, you must do it with a woman you are absolutely willing to die for.

So after seeing this nollywood movie today (can't believe I just did shed tears on a mere movie, nollywood flick for that matter..things happen sha!) I now totally understand my cousin.

I am not married yet but when I finally do, I will stand by her in EVERY situation. I will never expose her to any family or external pressure whatsoever..(Real brothers don't do that! And I'm a real bro!)

And to the sisters looking for love and ultimately marriage, go for a MAN, a real bro and not some boy with a man's stature. They are two different things. A real man will never lay a finger on you or expose you to family or external pressure but boys will. Also make sure the brother is a CHILD of God. And hey, I don't mean born again religious fanatics.No. But a simple bro with the fear of God. And! knowledge of the word of God because this knowledge helps. Yes it does. It comes handy when a brother needs to make some serious decisions.
Go for a man that loves you more than you love him and he must have the capacity or potential to provide for you. Now this is a biblical command guys. A man must provide for his family. Go for the valorous and not some pusi-llantinous vacous anachronistic dour! Gbam!!!

The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is the kind of mystery that’s not supposed to be possible anymore. The Information Age is also the age of surveillance, of interconnectedness, of cloud computing, of GPS satellites, of intelligence agencies that can monitor terrorists from space or call in a drone strike from a control console on the other side of the world.

But the satellite coverage of the planet isn’t as complete as some people might assume.
“Despite the impression that people get when they use Bing and Google Earth and Google Maps, those high-resolution images are still few and far between.

As officials from several countries, and dozens of planes and boats, scour the South China Sea and the Bay of Bengal for the mysteriously missing China-bound Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 with 239 people aboard, some people are wondering if there might be some connection to the Bermuda Triangle.
It was inevitable that the disappearance would evoke comparisons to the infamous supposed patch of water into which ships and planes are said to vanish without a trace. Several days ago, a Malaysian politician tweeted, “New Bermuda Triangle detected in Vietnam waters, well-equipped sophisticated devices are of no use!” This outraged many people, who deemed his comments insensitive, and he later apologized.
The phrase “Bermuda Triangle” was coined in 1964, but it only became known worldwide a decade later, when Charles Berlitz, whose family created the popular series of language-instruction courses, wrote a book about it. Berlitz believed the legendary lost island subcontinent continent of Atlantis was real and somehow responsible for mysterious disappearances off the coast of Florida.

Over the years, many theories have been offered to explain the mystery. Some writers have expanded upon Berlitz’s ideas about Atlantis, suggesting the mythical city may lie at the bottom of the sea and be using its reputed “crystal energies” to sink ships and planes. Other more fanciful suggestions include time portals and extraterrestrials — including rumors of underwater alien bases. Still others believe the explanation lies in some sort of extremely rare and natural geological or hydrological phenomena.
Others suggest that the Malaysia Airlines plane disappeared over a patch of ocean that is on the exact opposite part of the globe from the Bermuda Triangle –  isn’t that a bizarre coincidence?

What you eat determines who you are, how you feel, and of course, how you look. Here’s how to avoid eating out of habit, emotional distress or plain boredom and ensure that food satiates you on all levels.

Eat when hungry, not because you should be hungry:
Your diet chart doesn’t have to resemble a military time table, where you must at all costs have lunch at noon and a tea/coffee break plus snack later in the afternoon. Sometimes, you may just not feel like it. Listen to your body, not your mind.

Keep the emotions out:
You don’t want your meals to be influenced by your mood swings. Food is not the solution to boredom, tiredness, irritation, depression or anger. Calm down before you attack that meal, else you’ll stuff your face with unnecessary calories and won’t even feel better post the binge.

Don’t eat with hogs:
You’re influenced, subconsciously or otherwise, by the people you eat with. Families and couples often end up with similar eating patterns. For instance, If one person habitually eats dessert post every meal, the others will automatically follow suit. It isn’t a sin to indulge from time to time, but it isn’t the best idea to be so easily swayed.

Trick your sweet tooth:
There are other ways to indulge your sweet apart from sugary, buttery, gooey and sinfully sticky store-bought deserts. The first golden rule: make your own desserts. That way, you’ll physically see the amount of sugar/fat that goes in, and decide accordingly if you want to replace some ingredients with healthier ones or skip dessert altogether and enjoy the natural sweetness of fruit/dried fruit instead.
Change your cutlery:
The bigger your plates, bowls, mugs and spoons, the bigger your servings will be. However, this doesn’t call for a dramatic switch to hobbit cutlery. Keep the change reasonable, and you’ll find yourself feeling full way before you did with those larger-than-life plates. We’re more visual that we think we are.

Up the aesthetic value:
Talking about the visual element, there’s no denying the importance of the aesthetic factor. Food well-presented — with a balance of colours, textures and flavour — is the stuff gastronomic orgasms are made of. Are you going to treat yourself to one today?

Turn off the TV:
Please, please tell me you aren’t a couch potato. Eating with the idiot box on can either lead to mindless eating or conversely, loss of appetite. In both cases, you don’t pay attention to what’s on your plate. It’s obvious that you aren’t going to feel satiated at the end of the meal.

No shopping on an empty stomach:
Eating the wrong things has its roots in buying the wrong things. We know that food laden with preservatives, fats, salt and sugar aren’t good for us but we’re more likely to pick them up when we head to the supermarket on empty stomach. Shop after you’ve eaten instead

vitamin E and selenium supplements increase prostate cancer risk When the SELECT trial started in 2001, there were high hopes it would prove that taking vitamin E or selenium could help prevent prostate cancer. The newest results from the trial show just the opposite—that taking selenium or vitamin E can actually increase the odds of developing prostate cancer.
Bottom line: men shouldn’t take selenium or vitamin E as a way to prevent prostate cancer, or anything else for that matter.
“I counsel all of my patients to absolutely avoid any dietary supplements that contain selenium or vitamin E—including multivitamins,” says prostate cancer expert Dr. Marc Garnick, a clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, an oncologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and editor in chief of Harvard’s Annual Report on Prostate Diseases.

The case against selenium and vitamin E

Studies done in the 1980s and 1990s suggested that vitamin E and selenium each somehow provided protection against prostate cancer. The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) was started in 2001 to see if that was true. The 36,000 healthy, middle-aged volunteers were divided into four groups. Each man took two pills a day: 400 international units (IU) of vitamin E plus 200 micrograms of selenium; vitamin E plus a placebo; selenium plus a placebo; or two placebos. Neither the men nor their doctors knew who was taking what.
Although SELECT was supposed to last until 2011, it was stopped three years early because neither vitamin E nor selenium were showing any benefit—and there were hazy warning signs they might be doing some harm.
A new report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute clarifies the picture. A team of researchers from across the U.S. looked specifically at almost 5,000 of the SELECT volunteers who sent in toenail clippings when they joined the trial. Toenail clippings are a great way to measure how much selenium is in a man’s (or woman’s) body. The new study showed that:
  • Taking vitamin E alone boosted the risk of developing high-grade prostate cancer, but only in men who started the study with low selenium levels.
  • Taking selenium, either alone or in combination with vitamin E, increased the risk of high-grade prostate cancer in men who started the study with high selenium levels, but not in those with low selenium levels.
  • Among men who didn’t take either vitamin E or selenium, those who started the study with high selenium levels were no more likely to have developed prostate cancer than men who started it with low selenium levels. (This means the culprit is added selenium from supplements, not selenium from food.)
“The new data are very troubling, and emphasize that supplements can cause real and tangible harm,” says Dr. Garnick. “Any claims of benefits from dietary supplements must be ignored unless large, controlled, and well-conducted investigations confirm such benefits—which I believe will be a very rare occurrence.

I come from a family of champion snorers. Mother, father, brothers—we all broadcast nightly like buzz saws. But by 2006, my snorking and snarking took an unhealthy turn. Instead of merely driving everyone nearby to distraction, I began to stop breathing for short periods. Dozens of times per night, my upper airway fell slack like a worn-out garden hose, which pinched off the flow of air and jarred me awake. Blood oxygen plummeted and adrenaline surged into my bloodstream, making blood pressure swing up and down.
After a sleep study in which I slumbered overnight at a special clinic while wired up to various gadgets, my doctor offered an explanation for my increasing fatigue and mental fog: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Not surprisingly, I read with great interest a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) which reported that treating OSA can help people with very hard to control blood pressure. Many people with this so-called treatment resistant hypertension take several medications but their pressures remain stubbornly high. Many people with treatment-resistant hypertension also have OSA.

Healthier BP with CPAP

Could treating their OSA help? To find out, researchers in Spain provided the standard treatment for OSA to nearly 200 men and women for 12 weeks. The treatment was continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which uses a facemask and bedside air pump to inflate the upper airways enough to prevent the collapse of soft tissue in the upper throat that obstructs airflow.
After 12 weeks of CPAP, average 24-hour blood pressures in the study participants were a few ticks lower. They also had more healthy nighttime blood pressure patterns.
The improvements, though modest, are still important. Nighttime interruptions in breathing, or “apneas,” starve the brain of oxygen and stress out the cardiovascular system. Inadequately treated OSA comes with a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes. Another hazard is next-day drowsiness that predisposes people to accidents.

What it means for those with OSA

To get the bottom line on the study for OSA sufferers, I talked to Dr. Atul Malhotra, an expert on sleep apnea and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical. He’s also the chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.
“The wrong message is to say CPAP is weak,” Dr. Malhotra says. “Blood pressure medications offer a bigger bang for the buck to reduce daytime blood pressure, but it’s important to say that when you treat sleep apnea there are a lot of other benefits that are not necessarily related to daytime blood pressure.”
I’ll say! I was absolutely miserable pre-CPAP. But now I sleep like a lamb (well, probably more like an helium-inflated Macy’s Day Parade lamb). Every night I strap on the headgear of what I affectionately call my “astronaut machine.” A small high-tech bedside air pump monitors my breathing and adjusts the flow of filtered, humidified air to my nose. A microchip in the machine tracks my breathing patterns and adjusts the flow throughout the night to compensate for shifts in body position.

Overcoming CPAP roadblocks

But not all of my brother and sister CPAPers are as lucky. Some can’t get used to the mask and tend to tear it off in their sleep or simply don’t wear it at all. But most people can adapt to CPAP.
“Strapping a mask to your head is not ideal, but in some people adherence is extremely good,” Dr. Malhotra says. “They wear it all night every night and couldn’t get to sleep without it. Then they get transformative benefits from it.”
How do you get to that point? A critical factor is mask comfort. “The key is just to find one you like,” Dr. Malhotra says. “It’s like going to Baskin Robbins. There are 31 flavors, and you just have to try different flavors before you find one you like.”
Fortunately, the Baskin Robbins of CPAP is well stocked these days with a variety of mask options. It includes nasal masks, full face masks, and twin tubes that deliver air to each nostril.
Mask fitting can be a trial-and-error process, and you may have to try different ones until you find the right match. “If you try pistachio at Basin Robbins the first time and don’t like it you may never come back,” Dr. Malhotra says, “but some people try pistachio the first time and like it.”
Me, I like vanilla—the smaller, lighter nose-only nasal mask. My brain learned quickly to keep my mouth closed and breath through the nose. Later I found better-designed headgear and an accordion-like mask that maintained its seal better despite my occasional tossing and turning.
Dr. Malhotra urges those going on CPAP not to quit if the first taste isn’t pleasing. “Even if the first experience with CPAP doesn’t go well,” Dr. Malhotra says, “it’s very important to keep trying.” Untreated or inadequately treated sleep apnea can have devastating effects on health and quality of life, but there is usually a solution.

Bizarre: This oddly-shaped egg (left) - featuring a 3cm-long tail - was discovered at a house in Lingen, northern China. Laid by a hen, it is slightly larger than the average egg (right) - and also has a small, twisted tailI am sure you have seen a lot of eggs in your life time but one with a tail is surely not something you come across on a daily basis.
This bizarre egg with a 3cm long tail was discovered at a house in Lingen, China.
The egg which is said to be a little larger than your everyday egg has a twisted tail which makes one a bot reluctant to eat.
It was found in the home of a villager, Mr Lu, who keeps several hens. Lu said he has never seen such a strange hen before refusing to divulge what hos plans are for the strange specimen.

Laid by a hen, it is slightly larger than the average egg – and also has a small, twisted tail.
But while its odd accessory might make it less appealing to eat, it also has one advantage – it makes the egg far easier to crack.
The misshapen food was found by a villager known as Mr Lu at his home in Liyuan village in Shanxi province, which situated along the banks of the Fen River.
Mr Lu, who keeps several hens at his house, said he had never seen such a strange egg before – but did not say whether he would be sampling the oddity.

While is not uncommon for birds to produce oddly-shaped eggs, experts cannot agree what causes other animals, such as hens, to lay eggs with tails.
However, some suspect the fowl could produce such a bizarre creation as a result of stress.
It is not the first time a Chinese hen has popped out such an unusual egg.

In May 2012, a hen in Hukou seemingly forgot the rules of nature by laying an egg with a fatty inch-long tail.
The egg itself was a little smaller than normal, but its oddity meant it measured a lofty 8.5cm in length.
And, according to China News, a ‘spoon-shaped’ egg was laid by a hen in Huaibei City in China’s Anhui province in January 2005.

Chris Brown has been diagnosed as bi-polar, suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and self-medicating inappropriately. This was revealed during his last court appearance...

He appeared in court yesterday for a probation hearing and a letter from his rehab facility gave the singer high marks for improvement but suggested he remain in treatment.

The letter, obtained by E! News, reads in part,
"Mr. Brown will also require close supervision by his treating physician in order to ensure his bipolar mental health condition remains stable. It is not uncommon for patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Bipolar II to use substances to self-medicate their biomedical mood swings and trauma triggers.""Mr. Brown became aggressive and acted out physically due to his untreated mental health disorder, severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD." Chris was ordered to remain in treatment for two more months. His next hearing is set for April 23

The whole “twin bed with threadbare sheets” thing may have worked in college, but you’re out of the frat house now—which means your bedroom needs to grow up, too. “Surrounding yourself with warmth and luxury is a catalyst for sex—an aphrodisiac, even,” says Cathy Hobbs, an interior designer in New York City. “It’s the difference between being at Motel 6 and the Four Seasons.”

Make your bedroom a place where women want to jump between the sheets—and stay there—with these seven tips. Then hang up the “Do Not Disturb” sign and get busy.
1. Invest in a latex mattress
If your sex life is a circus—acrobatic positions, animal noises, crazy stunts—you need a mattress that can handle all the action. Latex is the answer: It’s the easiest to move around on, so you can seamlessly transition from one move to another, according to SleepLiketheDead.com, a nonprofit mattress review site. Plus, “latex mattresses tend to wear very well,” says Chris Winter, M.D., a sleep medicine specialist. “You don’t get that ditch in the middle of the bed over time.” And go big: “Size matters—buy a queen size, minimum,” says Hobbs.

2.. . . Or buy a memory foam topper
Don’t want the kids or a roommate to hear you getting it on? The density of memory foam will absorb the sound of your thrusting. Although it’s not the best surface for active sex, memory foam can give you a little extra traction during missionary or woman on top. “If you’re on the bottom, you’re melded into the mattress,” Dr. Winter says. “So if your partner pushes against you, you’re not going to move.”

3. Spring for high-thread-count sheets
Your starting place: 400 thread count. But, really, the higher, the better. And skip the satin sheets—that’s just cliché (and a recipe for serious night-sweating). “Nothing feels better on your skin than pure cotton,” says Hobbs. Look for Egyptian cotton, often referred to as “sateen,” which is smoother than the standard stuff. The gold standard? E. Braun & Co. or Frettelinens, but Martha Stewart’s line at Macy’s is a good option, too, she says.

4. Stick with white sheets
“If you want to set the mood, nothing is more inviting than pure white sheets,” says Hobbs. “I have never been in a hotel and seen a black sheet.” Another option: white sheets with a solid-colored border in navy, hunter green, brown, or the Greek Key pattern. “Men think beautiful sheets are feminine,” says Hobbs. “But the Greek Key pattern is a very strong statement—classy and masculine at the same time.”

5. Use unscented detergent
If your sheets smell like a flower garden, she may think you anticipated getting her naked or could convey the scent of another woman, says Hobbs. Try Arm & Hammer’s perfume-free detergent, which is gentle enough for high-end linens, she says.

6. Buy a foam pillow
Down pillows are great for sleeping, but foam pillows are practically built for sex—especially the ones that are shaped like a wedge. “These are made for people with breathing or sleep problems,” says Dr. Winter. They’re also perfect for slipping under her butt to give you a better angle for penetration. A subtler option: a shredded latex pillow, which you can stuff according to your desired thickness and firmness, allowing for experimentation.

7. Pick a platform bed
If you’re in the market for a new frame—and want one that won’t squeak during sex—a platform bed is your best bet. “If a bed is on four legs, it will probably creak more,” says Hobbs. “But a platform bed is low to the ground and basically supported by itself.” Plus, it’s stylish and more masculine than other styles.

Fears of cellphones causing cancer may be unwarranted. According to a report released today by the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) Programme, the United Kingdom’s largest research program on the possible health risks of mobile technology, there is no evidence of adverse health effects—such as increased risk of leukemia or early childhood development of cancer—from radio waves emitted by cellphones or cellphone towers. The report, based on multiple lab and epidemiological studies, concludes MTHR’s in-depth, 11-year analysis.

Risky? Consuming a moderate dose of vitamin E spurred lung tumor growth in cancer-prone mice. Now this is some serious stuff! Most of you medicos will understand that vitamins are antioxidants which help the cell fight against cancer. They do this by donating ions to free radicals to curb the production of reactive oxygen species and thus reducing oxidative stress. What this means is that they help us fight cancer in the body.Thats what we know, but this research is proving that they infact cause more harm than the good we have always associated them with...
Read and drop your comments...  Many people take vitamins such as A, E, and C thinking that their antioxidant properties will ward off cancer. But some clinical trials have suggested that such antioxidants, which sop up DNA-damaging molecules called free radicals, have the opposite effect and raise cancer risk in certain people. Now, in a provocative study that raises unsettling questions about the widespread use of vitamin supplements, Swedish researchers have showed that moderate doses of two widely used antioxidants spur the growth of early lung tumors in mice.
Some cancer specialists caution against basing public health advice on the study, published online this week in Science Translational Medicine. “You can’t extrapolate from this study to make a recommendation to people,” says Barry Kramer, director of the Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. He notes that the science of antioxidants is complicated and that the results of mice studies often don’t apply to humans. Still, Kramer and others say the new findings demand further exploration.
The observation decades ago that people who consumed lots of fruits and vegetables had less cancer suggested that the antioxidants in these foods might be protecting them. But in the 1980s, researchers launched two large clinical trials to test whether the antioxidants β carotene (a vitamin A precursor), vitamin A, and vitamin E protect smokers from lung cancer—and found more cases of lung cancer in volunteers taking β carotene, leading one trial to end early. A more recent trial testing vitamin E and selenium to prevent prostate cancer was stopped when prostate cancer turned out to be more common in the vitamin E group.
The Swedish researchers, led by Per Lindahl and Martin Bergö of the University of Gothenburg, studied two antioxidants: n-acetylcysteine (NAC), a water-soluble drug used to thin mucus in people with lung disease, and fat-soluble vitamin E. They gave mice genetically engineered to develop lung tumors a dose of NAC comparable to what a patient would receive or chow containing about 10 times more vitamin E than is in ordinary mouse food. “A lot of vitamin pills contain a lot more than that. It’s a conservative dose,” Bergö says.
Compared with mice on a normal diet, the mice consuming the antioxidants developed more lung tumors, their tumors were more aggressive, and they lived only half as long. Follow-up studies suggested that by reducing reactive oxidative species and DNA damage in the cell, the antioxidants turn down a gene, p53, that is key to keeping cell growth in check and is often inactivated in cancer. For example, p53’s protein stops the cell cycle so enzymes can repair damaged DNA and triggers apoptosis, or self-destruction, in severely damaged cells. In cancer cells in which p53 had been turned off, Lindahl and Bergö found, the antioxidants had no effect on cell proliferation.
The implication, Bergö suggests, is that people at high risk of cancer—such as smokers—and others who have incipient tumors should avoid taking extra antioxidants. “In a normal cell an antioxidant might be very good. But if you have a small tumor that might become a cancer, it will reduce p53 and the tumor will grow,” Bergö says.
A clinical researcher involved with the aborted trials that tested antioxidants to prevent lung and prostate cancersays he is “thrilled” by the study. “It’s the first paper I’ve seen that goes into some of the molecular biology to explain what we saw,” says medical oncologist Gary Goodman of the Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle, Washington. “This really shows that high doses of vitamins can be harmful.”
Others are more restrained. “It’s a provocative study,” says cancer biologist David Tuveson of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. “Perhaps we should look more carefully at what’s available over the counter.” But he would like to see a more detailed explanation of how the cell’s sensing of reactive species controls p53 activity. Lung disease researcher Shyam Biswal of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, wonders if the results would be the same in mice with cancer sparked by a carcinogen, rather than an existing mutation. “The model is great, but it’s a very aggressive model,” Biswal says.
Another huge caveat, Kramer adds, is that in the earlier lung cancer prevention trials, only the participants taking β carotene had a higher risk of lung cancer, not those on vitamin E alone. “It’s not likely that all antioxidants are exactly the same,” he says. He and others also emphasize that the study does not suggest that people should eat less fruit and vegetables, which provide smaller doses of antioxidants and likely have other benefits.
Bergö and Lindahl now plan to extend their mouse studies to tests of β carotene and vitamin C and to other cancer types. They also plan to comb through medical records in Sweden to see if lung disease patients receiving NAC are at higher risk for lung cancer.

I spend most of each workday sitting in a chair, my fingers the only part of my body moving with any intensity. Technology lets me—as well as millions of other people—earn a living from the relative comfort of our desks, without having to break a sweat or even stand up. Once the workday is done, we can transition straight from desk to car to couch, taking barely a step in between.

The ease of our modern workday could come at the expense of our longevity. A new study of older women in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine finds that sitting for long stretches of time increases the odds of an untimely death. The more hours women in the study spent sitting at work, driving, lying on the couch watching TV, or engaged in other leisurely pursuits, the greater their odds of dying early from all causes, including heart disease and cancer.

And here’s the kicker: Even women who exercised regularly risked shortening their lifespan if most of their daily hours were sedentary ones.
“Even if you are doing the recommended amount of moderate to vigorous exercise, you will still have a higher risk of mortality if you’re spending too many hours sitting,” says Dr. JoAnn Manson, one of the study’s authors, and chief of preventive medicine at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “Each of these behaviors is important and has an independent effect on cardiovascular disease and mortality.”
How exactly sitting contributes to reduced longevity isn’t clear, but there are a few possible mechanisms.

“Sedentary behavior is associated with an increased risk of the development of chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” says Dr. I-Min Lee, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

When you sit, you expend fewer calories than you would while standing, and you demand little effort from your muscles. Sitting too much can also lead to other behaviors that contribute to obesity and heart disease. “Many times when people are sitting, what are they doing? They’re often watching TV and snacking,” says Dr. Manson.

Work out

One way to avoid prolonged sitting during the workday is to switch to a standing desk, or one that can adjust to sitting and standing positions. Some companies are piloting the use of treadmill desks, which let workers walk at a leisurely pace while they type or answer the phone. However, these machines are pricey, and if you set the speed too high your legs will wear out before 5 o’clock rolls around.
An easier, no-cost solution is to set your smartphone timer to go off every 30 to 60 minutes during the day. When the alarm rings, “Stretch and move around the office to avoid any prolonged sitting at one time,” Dr. Manson recommends.

Sit less

How much sitting can you safely do in a day? In the study, women who were inactive for 11 or more hours a day fared the worst, facing a 12% increase in premature death, but even lesser amounts of inactive time can cause problems. “Once you’re sitting for more than 6 to 8 hours a day, that’s not likely to be good for you,” Dr. Manson says. You want to avoid prolonged sitting and increase the amount of moderate or vigorous exercise you do each day, she adds.
When it comes to exercise, “Any activity is good,” says Dr. Lee. “Some is better than none, and more is better than less.” Ideally, work in a full half-hour or hour of exercise each day, while trying to be active—even in short spurts—the rest of the time. But if you can only squeeze in 10 minutes of dedicated exercise at a time, aim for that

In an interview with Saturday Punch, popular On-Air-Personality and event host, Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Freeze CoolFM talked about his $200k (N32million) watch collection, his dislike for Michael Kors and said some Nigerian celebs wear fake designer items. Excerpts below...
When you say a collection, how many are you talking about?
Not like how many, like how much. I have maybe $200,000 in wristwatches. What I am wearing now is a Rolex Daytona, I got it from Polo for Christmas. It cost about $30,000. Polo is Nigeria’s only authorised dealer, so I bought it from the company and I love it. I love pens too. Sometimes I could just be like a woman. I love things that shine but not all the time. I like cufflinks, pens but I am not the necklace or a bracelet kind of guy. Though I wear bracelets once in a while; so I like my cufflinks, pens and wristwatches, any attire that would show them off, I am good with it. Continue...
What wouldn’t you be caught wearing?
Michael Kors. I am sorry but I just think that brand is so razz. First their name, I think their name is so razz. Not exactly the name, it is the brand, all you have for the logo is MK. Their products are loud, ugly and cheap. I see someone wearing a Michael Kors watch and I see it as they are trying so hard to wear Rols gold. I can’t afford that so the next thing is to pick up Michael Kors. I would rather take equally priced designer but with a bit more class and less noise. I would never be caught wearing that. Designers I like are Tom Ford, Gucci, I love LV shoes that are not monogrammed. I like Hermes; I think that is a really brilliant designer. I like the fact that they play with orange a lot.

What is your take on celebrities posting photos of their expensive fashion items on their social media accounts?
First thing first, for all the entertainers putting up pictures of their accessories on Instagram, can they please tweet the receipt from an authorised dealer. Trust me, I have seen too many celebs wear fake stuffs. You can tell that they don’t know what they are wearing. Of course, there are a few brand names like D’banj, Don Jazzy, P-Square or Wizkid that would not wear fake. I have seen them wear good watches. But there are some other people who I have seen wear funny looking pieces. There was one particular musician that I saw wearing a Rolex and the gold was fading. Rolex never uses gold plates, they use pure gold. If you see anything gold on a Rolex, it is pure gold. When I saw that, I was disappointed at the musician, especially because of the level of respect I had for the musician. There is no such thing like buying a Rolex with a credit card. You can’t buy a Rolex with a credit card; who are you? Diddy? For you to be able to walk away with a £20,000 watch, you would have a substantial amount of money in that card.

The State Security Service, SSS, has finally secured a warrant of arrest for the Deputy National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nasir El-Rufai, and has now launched a manhunt for him, the spokesperson for the agency has said.

This is even as armed operatives of the Service again stormed a second house in Abuja believed to belong to the former minister in their desperate bid to arrest him.
They had earlier in the afternoon invaded his first house in the Maitama District of the nation’s capital, but could not find him as he had reportedly gone to pick his children from school. They were said to have tried to force their way in to arrest the former minister.

In the latest siege on another property, also in the Maitama District, the operatives were said to have beaten up some private guards for refusing them entry.
The spokesperson of the SSS, Marylyn Ogar, confirmed that the operatives visited Mr. El-Rufai’s second house to arrest him, but denied that anyone was beaten.
“I hate cheap blackmail,” Ms. Ogar told Premium Times on telephone. “We went to the first place, nobody was beaten up. How will we go to the second place and beat people up?”
She explained that the SSS got an arrest warrant demanded by Mr. El-Rufai, but could not find him to personally serve him the document.
“We extended a friendly invitation to him,” the SSS spokesperson said. “He was invited honourably to come and make some explanations about the comments attributed to him.
“He said he wanted an arrest warrant. We have now obtained that from a competent court and we are wondering why he is running.
“We want to serve it on him. Or is there any Nigerian that is above the law?
“The president has said his ambition is not worth any Nigerian’s blood. So why will anyone else be making provocative statements?”
The manhunt for the former minister followed his refusal to honour an invitation from the SSS on Thursday.
He cited his pending suit against the Service over his detention in a hotel in Awka during the Anambra State Governorship last November 16 as the reason for refusing to honour the invitation.
Mr. El-Rufai also insisted on seeing a warrant of arrest before he could go to the SSS office.
The invitation of the APC chief was in connection with his remarks at a conference in Abuja on Wednesday that there might be violence if the 2015 general elections were not credible.
Meanwhile, Mr. El-Rufai, in statement by his media advisor, Muyiwa Adekeye, on Friday, confirmed that armed SSS officials stormed his home in Abuja following his rejection of the attempt by the organization to compel him to report at their office without a valid warrant.
The statement said the former minister had on Thursday firmly told the Director General of SSS that he would be exercising his right not to go to the SSS offices except a warrant mandates him and offered to meet the SSS officials in his home or office.
“The armed invasion of his house is a clear indication that the SSS imagines itself as an agency immune from respecting fundamental rights, behaviour akin to a gathering of toughs before whom every citizen must quake,” the statement said.
“The SSS agents did not produce any warrant to back their invasion of his premises.
“The assault on El-Rufai’s house continues a sorry tradition of serial violation of his rights by the SSS which has arrested him at airports and hotels.
“The most recent was the action of the SSS in violating his right to freedom of movement in Awka during the Anambra elections. Without any just cause or formal charge, the Directorate of State Security Services (SSS) had unlawfully detained El Rufai, the Deputy National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the premises of Finotel Hotel, Akwa, Anambra State, from the 15th day of November, 2013 to the 16th day of November, 2013.”
The statement said during the period, Mr. El-Rufai was not only restricted to the hotel, he was denied access to his congregational prayer as a devout Muslim, and kept incommunicado without access to anyone and or the press.
It stated that in order to remedy the flagrant violation of his fundamental rights as enshrined in sections 35, 39, 40 and 41 of the Constitution, the former minister sued the SSS, seeking eight reliefs, including an injunction to restrain the SSS from further infringing on his fundamental rights.
